Academic Focus

Our curriculum challenges students beyond the traditional comprehensive academic curriculum with multiple foreign languages and Pre-Advanced Placement and Advanced Placement courses complemented by a robust array of extracurricular activities. We offer a premier education that is tailor-made to develop character and leadership while sharpening academic skills. Students are required to participate in an academic summer term and to complete community service hours. 

Academic Expectations: 

All scholars are expected to pass each class to the best of their ability. Failing a class will result in intervention from the teacher, principal, counselor, and parent. Scholars that fail a course are at risk of being placed on academic probation. Academic probation guidelines are outlined below. 

Middle School Academic Probation (6-8) 

Scholars failing one or more classes in middle school will be placed on academic probation for one academic year. During academic probations, scholars must pass all classes. At the end of academic probation, the administrative team will recommend unsuccessful scholars to return to their home campus. 

High School Academic Probation (9-12) 

Scholars failing two or more credits will be placed on academic probation for one academic year. Scholars must recover all failed credits and pass all currently enrolled courses to remain at Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy for the following academic year. Scholars that fail to meet academic probation expectations and/or fail one or more currently enrolled courses will return to their home campus the following academic year. 

General Academic Supports: 

Action 1: Teacher notification to parent/scholar via email, mail, phone call, or in-person meeting. 

Action 2: Parent/Counselor/Administrator meeting with parent/scholar. Tutoring referral if needed.  

Action 3: Referral for Academic Probation Supports. 

Academic Probation Supports: 

Action 1: Academic success conference with school counselor. Letters will be sent home to parents for signature. 

Action 2: Enrollment into a DISD Credit Recovery Program. 

Action 3: Monthly check ins from Credit Recovery Facilitator or School Counselor. 

Action 4: Committee review of scholars progress and final recommendations given at the end of each academic year.
